Shares of Shopify Inc. (SHOP) surged last week after the Canadian e-commerce technology provider delivered an estimate-thumping second-quarter earnings report. That allayed investors' fears about the company's purported artificial intelligence (AI) vulnerabilities.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said AI is making it easier for entrepreneurs to launch and grow businesses, calling it the beginning of a "golden age of entrepreneurship." He said traffic and orders from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini have tripled over the past year, helping more small businesses reach customers.
The agentic shopping shift is most visible at Shopify. Artificial intelligence (AI)-referred traffic to Shopify stores tripled year over year in the second quarter, and orders through those AI channels tripled right along with it.
