American Airlines' first Airbus A321XLR, the company's longest-range single-aisle plane, is set to take off Thursday from New York for Los Angeles. The extra-long-range narrow-body jet "opens up the menu for all these destinations that are just too small for a widebody," American's head of network, Brian Znotins, told CNBC.
