French jet engine maker Safran on Wednesday named U.S. contractor Howmet Aerospace as the supplier of parts at the centre of industrial issues that led to a slowdown of engine production and curtailed deliveries of Airbus jets.

Airbus is facing a criminal investigation in Britain into potential violations of export control rules involving several of its UK entities, the aerospace group said on Tuesday.

Airbus said Tuesday that its net profit in the first half year fell 46 percent to 825 million euros ($890 million), dragged down by a massive writedown in its space operations.

Europe's Airbus reported sharply lower second-quarter profits on Tuesday as the cost of investing in higher jetliner production, coupled with largely pre-announced charges in its Space Systems business, outweighed higher revenue.

Both Boeing and Airbus have faced production snarls of key aircraft parts and a shortage of skilled workers coming out of the pandemic. Boeing's problems after the pandemic have been compounded by its safety crisis that forced it to slow production to stamp out defects.

Airbus is drawing up a new turnaround plan for its Space Systems business, industry sources said, adding talks over potential European consolidation to fend off competition include Italy's Leonardo as well as France's Thales.

Airbus beat Boeing in the orders tally at last week's Farnborough Airshow. But orders were down from previous years amid supply-chain frustrations.
